Hotel Review: Babylonstoren, South Africa.......continued

When we made the online booking we found ourselves in an unusual situation. We chose a room that we later found out was scheduled for some renovations and wasn’t going to be available for all three nights of our visit. So we opted to split our stay across two different rooms. Our first night was in one of the original cottages, the Garden Cottages and the final two nights was in the Farmhouse.

When we arrive we’re shown around the main areas of the property, we hand over our car keys and settle down for lunch at a small table in a romantic glass house - which, is a stunning feature of the Greenhouse restaurant.

And just like magic, once we finish eating, someone appears and ushers us to our cottage. But, we’re presented with an unexpected quandary. Turns out our original room was finished ahead of schedule so we’re offered the option to spend all three nights in the same room or continue to split our stay.

Oh dear! This is not good for me. I am dreadful at making decisions like these. And of course I was dying to see the Garden Cottage room, after all I was already completely in love with exterior. “Can we have look inside?” I ask. “Of course you can!” says Roscoe, our super friendly and down-to-earth host. So we have a look and I am immediately smitten. I knew I had to spend a night in this divine space.

As the sun began to set and the lights came on I snapped this charming row of cottages.

This is the rather glamorous and over-sized bathroom. I was wowed instantly and couldn’t wait to have a soak in the bath.

A cute-looking posie, isn’t it? Its name is tussie-mussie, it’s a freshly picked bunch of herbs that release lovely fragrances to help you relax when you drop them into your bath.

His-and-hers Wellington boots. I just adore this detail that happens to have a very important function too. This is after all a working farm and when it rains you couldn't ask for better footwear than this. Much to my annoyance, we forgot about them one morning after it had been raining and on our way to breakfast we had to navigate through thick, bright orange mud. So wear your Wellies!

The following morning we wake in our lovely cottage, Mr Fritz makes coffee and we zip up our bags which later, magically appear in our Farmhouse room. I’m extremely excited for many reasons this fine morning. I’d heard the breakfast spread was extremely delicious and I love exciting breakfast foods. We have the whole day to explore, taste wine, eat, eat some more, and finally settle into our new room that has some very special extra features. This cluster of rooms has its own plunge pool, spa and sauna. Bliss! There is also the Green Room. This is an incredibly inviting and tastefully decorated lounge room. It does have gorgeous green walls, ridiculously high ceilings, old wooden floors, beautiful rugs and modern chairs paired with a giant leather sofa. A roaring open fireplace and stacked book shelves add even more ambiance, and finally, there is a self-serve bar that also includes snacks, and a tea and coffee station. Our pre-dinner ritual of gin and sodas, nuts and biltong and staring into the fire was quickly established.

This is the exterior of the Farmhouse. It exudes character, charm and style and inspires relaxation.

Here is another corner of the beautiful Farmhouse. Every detail is a visual splendour.

The soaring ceiling height definitely adds to to atmosphere but so do the gorgeous black and white marble tiles, the enormous shower, and of course the bath, with an exquisite little brass side table - again, a perfect mix of old and new.

The smaller tiles delineate the shower and the opposite end is punctuated by two beautiful pedestal basins.

After Mr Fritz had a long and indulgent hot shower, I noticed this steamy window reflection on the opposite wall. A fleeting detail I just had to capture.
